Greetings!

I hope everyone is enjoying this early spring weather!

GMA’s next big event will be our 11th annual Human Capital Conference held on Tuesday May 3rd.  Have you had a chance to register yet?

Dave Ulrich will be our keynote this year for both the morning and lunch sessions, as well as a breakout.  Dave comes to us with a wealth of knowledge in Leadership and Human Resources. He is currently the Rensis Likert Professor at the Ross School of Business at the University of Michigan and is a partner at the RBL group, a consulting firm focused on helping organizations and leaders deliver value. Dave has published over 200 articles and book chapters and over 25 books! In 2012 Dave received a Lifetime Achievement Award from HR Magazine for being the “father of modern human resources.” Speakers like this don’t come to our area often so you won’t want to miss him!

The HCC Committee and GMA Board are excited about the full day of high quality programming and networking opportunities planned for our members and guests! Dave Ulrich’s morning keynote will be Emerging Trends in HR Value Creation. Dave will review the ways that HR professionals can create unique value for their organizations.  His lunch keynote will be Opportunities in Managing Culture. Dave will go more deeply into the ways HR can help share and create a new organization. He will talk about definitions of organization with evolving views of culture and explore way to help make culture a reality in an organization.

The breakout sessions cover a wide selection of topics:

  • The Changing Face of Human Capital: Is your HR strategy Generational Friendly?
  • Curiosity Based Communication
  • Develop Your Strategic Thinking Mindset – or Else!
  • Positivity in the Workplace, the Benefits and How to Get More
  • Successful HR Strategies for Building an Ethical Workplace Culture
  • Employment Law Update
  • Mental Health Awareness and Accommodations

Mark your calendar TODAY and register early! Early bird registration is through April 22. I hope to see you there!

I also want to remind you that you still have some time to submit your application for the GMA SHRM Professional Scholarship of $1,000. Deadline for applications is April 15, 2016. Click here for more information.

Government Affairs & Legal Updates

EEO-1 New Reporting

In February 2016 the Dept. of Labor published proposed regulations which will require W-2 wage information to be included according to job categories with 12 "pay bands." All companies with 100 employees or more are required to submit an annual EEO-1 Report to the EEOC. The new report does not require personal identity information, rather it will track the EEO category and wages of each employee within each pay band. This report will be used in the analysis of pay disparities based on gender, race, ethnicity, etc. The rules would go into effect in September 2017.

Trend Continues – Medical Marijuana Use Not Protected

Though marijuana use is legal in a number of states, most of those states are ruling that an employer can fire workers who test positive, even when the drug is prescribed and used off-work to treat a disability. Marijuana use is not a protected accommodation under the American with Disabilities Act, since it remains an illegal controlled substance under federal law. Most of the legal marijuana states also recognize that federal law, and try to balance a state’s right to use with an employer's interest in maintaining a drug-free workplace. In Swan v. Safeway Inc. (W.D. Wash., 2016), an employee filed a disability case after being fired for failing a post-accident drug test. He produced evidence that he had been prescribed marijuana for a disability, and claimed that the company's action was a failure to accommodate. The court disagreed. Though he had a state law right to use the drug, the employer did not have to alter its drug-free workplace policy. The discharge was valid. [Be cautious. If medical marijuana is legal in your state, check the state law and decisions. This case represents a trend; not every state has or will rule this way.]

Workforce Readiness & Diversity

Expand Recruitment and Improve Retention - Transportation

Are you looking to expand employee recruitment and improve retention? Is transportation a barrier to employment for your potential employees, due to scheduling conflicts or inaccessibility?

In 1984, hard-working citizens began receiving tax-free benefits from the IRS for commuting to work via public transportation. Since parking and transit ridership fees are on the rise in most cities, today’s benefits have been expanded to include parking, vanpools, and  biking (IRS Section 132(f)).

With these benefits, our goal is to increase employment amongst South Madison residents of all backgrounds and skill-levels by establishing reliable alternative modes of transportation to/from work. Together we can bridge the transportation gap that currently exists and improve the economic health of Dane County!

How does this benefit you, the employer?
  • Expands employee recruitment and improves retention
  • Reduces parking demand from employees and increases parking availability for customers
  • Improves employee productivity through reliable transportation and reduced absenteeism
  • Avoids business interruptions from bad weather or other emergencies
  • You may soon be able to get carbon credits for reducing pollution.
  • You can pay providers directly, so your employees do not have to do a thing!
What can we do to help?
  • Identify vehicles to be used and develop a cost structure that includes fuel, maintenance, insurance, and personnel
  • Design custom routes to minimize time spent traveling
  • Prepare surveys of all potential employees, regarding needs, pick-up time preferences, route preferences, etc.
  • Partner with community organizations to recruit residents and offer necessary job training
  • Act as a dedicated point of contact for you and your employees
What’s next?
On April 19, 2016, at 9:00AM we invite you to participate in this discussion, as community employers are crucial in finding a solution. This meeting will take place at the Dane County Job Center, 1819 Aberg Ave, Room 16. Please RSVP by Friday, April 8, 2016.

The Latest from the WRDC

In February, members from the WRDC met and discussed WRDC 2021 and goals for 2016-2017. In general, the team wanted to narrow the focus of the WRDC and place more emphasis on increasing the diversity maturity of our broader membership.  Our membership spans the spectrum from those very skilled in leading diversity and inclusion efforts to those that are just getting started. To help you, our goals for GMA SHRM for 2016 and 2017 are:

  • Create a definition of diversity and inclusion for GMA SHRM/ WRDC by May, 2016
  • Increase participation in fall Job Boot Camp (JBC) by at least 50% over 2015 (target of at least 87 participants)
  • Determine possibility of holding a spring JBC by July 2016
  • Determine possibility of holding an early spring JBC for graduating students in 2018 by March 2017.
  • Form relationships with non-profits, networking groups and interest groups that serve under-represented populations

We encourage you to get involved with the WRDC, as a committee member, sub-committee member, or by attending our events. This is an exciting time for the WRDC, GMA SHRM, and our Greater Madison Area employers.  Won't you join us?

Community Partnerships Event Recap

Community Partnerships hosted a “Family Fun Night” on March 22nd, 2016 at Play n’ Wisconsin for all children, youth, and families served by Community Partnerships’ programs. With the support of GMA-SHRM and KFC of Dane County, we hosted over 100 participants for a fun, social night out for families to play together and enjoy dinner. In addition to program participants from Early Childhood Initiative and Children Come First programs attending the event, a couple of young adults from our Transition to Independence program volunteered at the event. The Family Fun Night event was very successful and offered parents and children an opportunity to connect with other families and enjoy a night out together! HR InTouch Guidelines

Article Writing:

Do you have an interest in writing for the HR InTouch? We have an interest in learning more about your area of expertise!

Why should you volunteer? Top three reasons: 1) to share your knowledge and experiences to educate others; 2) to become more connected in the HR and Dane County communities; and 3) to contribute towards the advancement of GMA SHRM and the HR profession.

The first step is for you to choose a submission option: you can pre-submit an article to GMA SHRM at any time for us to use in any of the upcoming newsletters, you can sign up to write for a particular month, or we can put you on a list of people to contact in future months whenever we need articles.

Article length:

Because the HR InTouch is now in an online format, the size is flexible. The article should be engaging and hold readers’ attention. Include the core information in your article, and we will advise if it is too lengthy.

Solicitation:

GMA SHRM is conscious not to allow solicitation through the articles, in an effort to protect the interests of our partners and members. The nature of the article should be educational (i.e., what are the business advantages of having a product like yours) or informational. Otherwise, if you truly are interested in advertising through the HR InTouch, you can work with our Marketing Committee. As a rule of thumb for article writing, if the submission relates to a for-profit event, or specifically markets your company (vs. your industry), it is an advertisement, and should be purchased. If it is a not-for-profit event that your company is hosting, or an announcement (i.e., a SHRM member recently joined your company), it is an acceptable addition to the HR InTouch content. If you have any questions related to the appropriateness of your submission, please contact us.

If you have questions, or to submit an article, contact GMA SHRM at chapteradmin@gmashrm.org .
