Presentation Description

The end of 2008 has brought significant changes to two key human resources laws: the Americans with Disabilities Act and the federal Family and Medical Leave Act. These changes will require employers to change their current practices to be in compliance with the new laws.  With each law becoming effective in January, this timely GMA SHRM Summit features Jennifer Mirus and Bob Gregg of the Boardman Law Firm along with Lauri Morris of Quarles and Brady addressing each of these new laws to better prepare our members to administer these new changes correctly at their workplaces.  Your attendance is encouraged to receive the most up to date information and resources to enable to you be in compliance with the new changes.

Program Learning Objectives

The Americans With Disabilities Amendments Act becomes effective January 1, 2009. This presentation will review how the amendment broadens the definition of “disability” under the ADA and overturns several U.S. Supreme Court cases. Employers, HR professionals and anyone else who deals with employee issues can no longer rely on stale knowledge and must be aware of the ADA’s new parameters. We will also address why you may not need to fear these changes to the ADA, if you understand them.

New Federal Family and Medical Leave Regulations have finally been issued and become effective January 16, 2009. We will present a detailed review of these new rules including the two new categories of leave entitlements - the military caregiver leave and qualifying exigency leave - and of how these new rules affect your FMLA administration as well as pitfalls to avoid. The new rules have a direct impact on many major steps in FMLA administration, so come learn what's required and how to operate under the revised rules!
