HR Legal Update: Recent Developments and Hot Topics

Program Description

Employers scrambled to respond to the COVID-19 pandemic, and now employers are looking to return to something resembling normal.  With all of these rapid changes, come complicated legal issues.  At the same time, courts and administrative agencies continue to issue decisions and guidance on non-COVID-19 related issues.

This presentation will cover the hottest legal issues facing employers, including new legal developments.  This presentation will overview the relevant law, but also help HR professionals put the law into action.  Attendees will work through hypotheticals, case studies, and the practical implications of how the law will apply in their workplace.

Participants will learn:

  • The latest legal aspects of the COVID-19 pandemic (including considerations for employees with “long COVID”);
  • Common wage and hours errors (and how to avoid them); and
  • Understanding the legal parameters around leaves of absences, flexible scheduling, and other issues related to “the new normal.”

Brian P. Goodman is an attorney and a member of the Labor and Employment, School Law and Municipal teams at Boardman Clark LLP. Brian assists employers on a wide range of legal issues including: navigating the COVID-19 pandemic, employee separations, employee leaves of absences and accommodations, and discrimination and respectful workplace issues. He graduated from the University of Wisconsin Law School, magna cum laude and was elected to the Order of the Coif. Brian is a former member of the Greater Madison Area Society for Human Resource Management Board of Directors, and he currently serves on the Board of Directors for the Wisconsin School Attorneys Association.

Sarah J. Horner is an attorney at Boardman Clark LLP who advocates for individuals and businesses on a wide range of litigation matters—including employment-related disputes. Sarah primarily focuses on franchise and dealership law issues, but she also has experience counseling clients through workplace issues, consumer law challenges, and mediations. She graduated cum laude from the University of Wisconsin Law School and has a background in Psychology and Spanish. She currently serves on the Board of Directors for the Literacy Network. Sarah has been involved with events and publications for the Greater Madison Area Society for Human Resources Management since 2018 and uses her oral advocacy experience to present on a variety of issues at different events.
