Session 1

When the famous author, Wharton professor, and organizational psychologist, Adam Grant posted the following on LinkedIn in late 2023, it was “liked” by over 23 thousand and the vast majority of 600+ comments were along the lines of “Spot On,”  “Absolutely,” “Totally Valid,” and “Exactly!”
A sign of emotional intelligence is moving from “You made      me feel” to  “This is how I reacted.”
Our emotions aren’t caused by other people’s actions.
They’re shaped by our interpretations.
Blaming others gives them power over our feelings.
Taking responsibility empowers us.

However, there were some strong dissenting comments about Grant’s posting that suggest that things aren’t that simple. Gaslighting, victim blaming, holding others responsible for their disrespectful words, and setting boundaries, were some issues brought up by those who did not agree. Also, some who work in the DEI space point out that “Unintended harm is still harm.”

In this session, we’ll create a map of different points of view on the sensitive question of:  Who is responsible for our feelings?  Our goal is NOT to debate and persuade each other of our personal POV, but to practice in small groups using some tools for critical thinking and to experience DIALOGUE.  The goal of dialogue is exploration and understanding, not agreement or consensus (although that can happen).   You will decide for yourself what you think is “true” and strengthen your ability to think clearly about complex topics.

Participants will:
  • Increase your ability and willingness to listen and dialogue about sensitive issues.
  • Deepen self-awareness, the foundation skill of Emotional Intelligence.
  • Learn the basics of Argument Mapping to improve your critical thinking skills.
