Our first PDS of 2017 is on January 31 at the Alliant Energy Center.  This is a PDS not to miss – we will feature 2 speakers, who will speak on “14 Lifesaving Tips when Facing an Armed Intruder or Active Shooter in Your Company” and “Defending Your Reputation in the Wake of a Crisis”.  Register here to attend!

With January upon us, we also are officially rolling out our new Guest Grant Registration!  If you are considering joining GMA SHRM, have a bona fide connection to Human Resources and would like to apply for one of these Professional Grants, please complete the contact information on the form at this link.  We would love to have you join us! Thank you to Mike Johnson and the Membership Committee for creating this great opportunity for future members to check us out.

I hope everyone has a great start to 2017 and I look forward to seeing you at one of the many upcoming events.  If you have any questions on upcoming events or feedback to share, please reach out to me at melissa.chadwick@bakertilly.com.

Government Affairs & Legal Updates

ACA Extensions: 1095-C Due Dates and Good-Faith Transition Relief

Submitted by Mary Wilkosz, Forward Service Corporation and ABR Employment Services

On November 18, 2016 the IRS issued Notice 2016-70 announcing an extension of the due date for “Applicable Large Employers” to provide employees with the 2016 Form 1095-C (Employer provided health insurance offer and coverage) from January 31, 2017 to March 2, 2017; an employer with 50 or more full-time and/or full-time equivalent employees on average during the year is considered to be an “Applicable Large Employer”.   IRS Notice 2016-70 also extended the “Good-Faith” Transition Relief to apply to 2016 reporting as it did in 2015.

The notice does not extend the due date for filing the 1095-Cs with the IRS.  Paper forms are due to the IRS by February 28, 2017 and electronic submissions are due no later than March 31, 2017.

The “Good Faith” transition extension provides reporting entities relief from information reporting penalties as long as those entities file in a timely manner and can demonstrate they made a good faith effort to comply with reporting requirements.

Why Should I Attend the Day on the Hill? A Testimonial

Submitted by: Tammy L. Wacek, WPS Health Insurance

On January 18th, 2017, the Wisconsin Society for Human Resource Management Council is holding their Day on the Hill event. You might be asking yourself what is this event all about and why should you attend. This event provides a unique opportunity to meet your legislators and advocate on behalf of the HR profession. In addition, there are multiple speakers coming to discuss timely legislative updates topics.

This year will be my third time attending the event and I can tell you it is a very interesting and educational opportunity. If you are someone that has never met with your legislator, this event will allow you to gain insight into how to talk with your elected officials and the forum to do so in a way that is not intimidating. When you sign up for the event, a legislative meeting will be scheduled for you and you will be able to meet your legislators along with other attendees within your district. Training is also provided prior to your scheduled meeting so you have talking points and will feel prepared for your meeting. This is a great opportunity to become an advocate or continue your advocacy efforts!
For more information about the event and to register, visit the website: http://www.wishrm.org/2017-Day-on-the-Hill

Workforce Readiness & Diversity

Consider candidates who need a second chance in 2017

As you know and are probably experiencing, this is an extremely competitive market for recruiting and hiring. Companies everywhere are looking for different talent pools to fill their openings. One such source of candidates may be ex-offenders. While the overall Dane County unemployment rate as of November 2016 stood at 2.7% (not seasonally adjusted)[1], the rate of unemployment for ex-offenders can be 1.1 to 5.4 percentage points higher [2].

In October 2016, SHRM’s HR Magazine ran an extended feature on “Hiring Job Seekers with Criminal Histories.” [3] Every company and hiring manager needs weigh the potential risks and rewards for hiring a candidate with a less than pristine history. Most that do find that “the best approach to hiring individuals with criminal backgrounds is not so different from the one they use for everyone else: to evaluate each candidate on his or her merits.” [3] There are also incentives to hire ex-offenders – Work Opportunity Tax Credit and federal bonding programs  - and local organizations that are willing to help support ex-offenders re-entry – the Re-entry Program partnership among Madison-Area Urban Ministry (MUM), Dane County Human Services, and the Employment and Training Association (EATA). [4]

The benefits of giving an ex-offender a second chance can cause ripple effects through your organization and the community. Think about the feeling of being able to potentially positively impact an individual’s career path and the financial stability of their family. Think about how perceptions and unconscious (or conscious) biases towards someone with a criminal background may be challenged and changed. It’s a new year; consider giving an ex-offender a new start.

Do you have success stories or lessons learned regarding hiring ex-offenders? We’d love to hear them and feature them in an upcoming newsletter article. Contact Heather Kennedy, heather.kennedy@sparqcoach.com.

GMA SHRM Member News

GMA SHRM Member Spotlight

Name: Kristina Maher

Where do you currently work?
TeamSoft, which is an IT consulting firm.

What is the focus of your position?
As an HR Generalist, I enjoy a variety of job duties.  I’m kept busy with background checks, new hire orientation, benefits administration, resolving employee issues, updating policies, keeping our HRIS current, managing FMLA cases, processing exits, ACA reporting, event planning, and more!

How long have you been in the Human Resource field?
About ten years. I was lucky to have a college internship at the State of Wisconsin’s Office of State Employment Relations.  My first job out of college in the summer of 2007 was in HR at Clasen Quality Coatings.

Which of your career accomplishments makes you proudest?
Any time I’m able to connect with an employee or their family members and help them navigate a stressful situation or celebrate big milestones.  I’m proud when my role in HR can have a positive impact on someone else’s life.

What is the best advice you’ve ever received?
There are only a few matters that are truly life or death situations.  This perspective changed the way I handle stress at work and in my personal life.

Why did you decide to join GMA SHRM?
I wanted to network with others in HR and knew GMA SHRM had great opportunities for professional development as well.  It has proven to be a valuable resource!

GMA SHRM Volunteer Spotlight

Name:   Jon Stinemetz

How long have you been volunteering with GMA SHRM? January will complete my first year

What committee are you volunteering with? WRDC

Have you volunteered on other committees? Not at this time, but I’m looking forward to expanding my options in 2017.

What do you enjoy about volunteering? Volunteering allows me the opportunity to network with like-minded individuals as well as utilize my strengths of team building and community outreach to my maximum ability.

What would you say to others who are considering volunteering with GMA SHRM?  The conversations and idea sharing is like no other group or organization.  Take advantage of this opportunity to network and grow, both personally and professionally.

What have you gotten back from volunteering with GMA SHRM?  Watching professionals interact with jobseekers during the Job Boot Camp solidifies why we do what we do within GMA SHRM.  Seeing the smiles on the faces of both GMA SHRM members and jobseekers was one of the best ROI’s I could have imagined when I volunteered for this committee.

HR InTouch Guidelines

Article Writing:

Do you have an interest in writing for the HR InTouch? We have an interest in learning more about your area of expertise!

Why should you volunteer? Top three reasons: 1) to share your knowledge and experiences to educate others; 2) to become more connected in the HR and Dane County communities; and 3) to contribute towards the advancement of GMA SHRM and the HR profession.

The first step is for you to choose a submission option: you can pre-submit an article to GMA SHRM at any time for us to use in any of the upcoming newsletters, you can sign up to write for a particular month, or we can put you on a list of people to contact in future months whenever we need articles.

Article length:

Because the HR InTouch is now in an online format, the size is flexible. The article should be engaging and hold readers’ attention. Include the core information in your article, and we will advise if it is too lengthy.

Solicitation:

GMA SHRM is conscious not to allow solicitation through the articles, in an effort to protect the interests of our partners and members. The nature of the article should be educational (i.e., what are the business advantages of having a product like yours) or informational. Otherwise, if you truly are interested in advertising through the HR InTouch, you can work with our Marketing Committee. As a rule of thumb for article writing, if the submission relates to a for-profit event, or specifically markets your company (vs. your industry), it is an advertisement, and should be purchased. If it is a not-for-profit event that your company is hosting, or an announcement (i.e., a SHRM member recently joined your company), it is an acceptable addition to the HR InTouch content. If you have any questions related to the appropriateness of your submission, please contact us.

If you have questions, or to submit an article, contact GMA SHRM at chapteradmin@gmashrm.org .
