Dear GMA SHRM Members,

Happy Fall! This is an exciting and busy time of the year, with the WI State SHRM Conference October 11th to 13th, along with various networking and roundtable events this month. We encourage you to join us for these events, where you'll have the opportunity to engage with your fellow HR professionals, network, and have lots of fun.

Following the October festivities, we have our highly anticipated Legal Update on November 14th. These sessions will provide valuable insights into the thoughtful and compliant use of AI and guidance on addressing employee mental health issues within the legal framework. You can find all the details and registration information on our GMA Education & Events page.

Additionally, we're thrilled to announce our New Member Referral Contest, running until October 27th. It's simple: share code “Save25” with your HR friends, colleagues, vendors, customers, and anyone you think might benefit from GMA membership. When a new member joins using your code, they'll receive a $25 discount on their first-year dues, and you'll be entered into the contest with a chance to win $200. Make sure they enter your name as "Referred By" on the New Member Application. For more information, please visit https://www.gmashrm.org/NewMemberContest

Our compensation survey will soon be available for purchase, offering valuable data on positions within the greater Madison area and beyond! You can access additional details at https://www.gmashrm.org/GMASHRM_Surveys

Take care, be well, and enjoy this beautiful fall weather. We look forward to seeing you soon!

Warm regards,

Laura Bermudo, President

Government Affairs & Legal Updates

Legal Update – DOL Proposes Higher Salary Level for White-Collar Exemption from Overtime

Submitted from Mai Chao Chang, Storm Larson & Brian P. Goodman, GMA SHRM Programming Committee Member, and Attorneys at Boardman & Clark LLP, a Platinum Partner

Mai Chao

Storm Larson

Brian P. Goodman

The Department of Labor (DOL) recently proposed increasing the salary level for the Executive, Administrative, and Professional exemptions from overtime pay under the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA). These exemptions are sometimes referred to as white-collar exemptions.

The proposed rule would increase the minimum salary level from $684 per week ($35,568 per year) to $1,059 per week ($55,068 per year). The proposed rule for the highly compensated employee exemption (which isn’t available for Wisconsin employees) would increase the minimum annual compensation requirements from $107,432 per year to $143,988 per year. In addition, the rule would also automatically update these salary levels every three years.

Litigation is anticipated regarding this new rule, as was the case when the Obama administration attempted to significantly increase these minimum salary levels. It is unclear when, if ever, the rule will take effect. However, given the potential impact of these rules, organizations may want to start thinking about how they might implement these rules should they take effect. An audit of overtime classification in an organization may be an appropriate place to start.

Volunteer Spotlight:  Christine Storlie

Meet GMA SHRM Volunteer, Christine Storlie!

How long have you been a member of GMA SHRM?  20 years

How long have you been a volunteer with GMA SHRM?   17 years

I have volunteered for the same committee the whole time.  However, it has changed names and split into a couple of different committees.  It used to be the Marketing and Communications Committee.  This committee was responsible for partnerships, newsletter, compensation survey, assisting with the creation of the website, etc.  You can see why we needed more committees to support the work we were doing.

Why do you volunteer with GMA SHRM?

I volunteer because I like to give back to this great organization that does so much for the HR community.  GMA SHRM is a great chapter with even better members.

What would you say to others who are unsure about volunteering with GMA SHRM?

It is a wonderful opportunity to meet new people and build relationships with your peers.

What’s been the biggest “surprise” to you since being a member of or volunteer with GMA SHRM?

I enjoy seeing how much we have grown since I started volunteering and how we are always looking to improve or make things more efficient.

What’s been the biggest “reward” for you since volunteering with GMA SHRM?

It has given me the opportunity to build lifelong friendships.

In addition to volunteering with GMA SHRM, Chris is a Senior HR Consultant with Carlson Dettmann Consulting. She regularly participates at the GMA SHRM Events along with other local Chamber events. Chris is a strategic thinker and very well connected in the area. If you see Chris at an event, be sure to say hi and introduce yourself!

HR InTouch Guidelines

Article Writing:
Do you have an interest in writing for the HR InTouch? We have an interest in learning more about your area of expertise!
Why should you volunteer? Top three reasons: 1) to share your knowledge and experiences to educate others; 2) to become more connected in the HR and Dane County communities; and 3) to contribute towards the advancement of GMA SHRM and the HR profession.
The first step is for you to choose a submission option: you can pre-submit an article to GMA SHRM at any time for us to use in any of the upcoming newsletters, you can sign up to write for a particular month, or we can put you on a list of people to contact in future months whenever we need articles.
Article length:
Because the HR InTouch is now in an online format, the size is flexible. The article should be engaging and hold readers’ attention. Include the core information in your article, and we will advise if it is too lengthy.
Solicitation:
GMA SHRM is conscious not to allow solicitation through the articles, in an effort to protect the interests of our partners and members. The nature of the article should be educational (i.e., what are the business advantages of having a product like yours) or informational. Otherwise, if you truly are interested in advertising through the HR InTouch, you can work with our Marketing Committee. As a rule of thumb for article writing, if the submission relates to a for-profit event, or specifically markets your company (vs. your industry), it is an advertisement, and should be purchased. If it is a not-for-profit event that your company is hosting, or an announcement (i.e., a SHRM member recently joined your company), it is an acceptable addition to the HR InTouch content. If you have any questions related to the appropriateness of your submission, please contact us.
If you have questions, or to submit an article, contact GMA SHRM at chapteradmin@gmashrm.org .
