Thank you!

What a great year! It’s hard not to be proud of all we have accomplished this past year. We had a successful 10th annual Human Capital Conference in May with engaging speakers and over 210 attendees!  We held annual golf outing and raised $4785 for our philanthropic partner, REACH a Child! We completed our first annual compensation survey with our new partner the QTI Group! And we achieved a gold Excel award from SHRM for the 2nd year in a row! These are just to name a few.

I am honored to begin my new role as Chapter President of Greater Madison Area SHRM and very excited to start this term with a strong Board of Directors by my side.  Join me in congratulating our 2015-2016 GMASHRM Board of Directors.

President Elect: Melissa Chadwick
Immediate Past President: Jeff Russell
Secretary/Treasurer: Natalie Busse
VP of Membership: Mike Johnson
VP of Programming: Tina Hallis
VP of Marketing & Communications: Missy Roth
Director of Workforce Readiness & Diversity: Heather Kennedy
Director of Education & Professional Development: Jeff Westra
Director of Government Affairs: Tammy Wacek
Director of Technology and Social Media: Tia Gibson
Director of Volunteer Engagement: LaShana Miller

As I begin this new journey, I look back at my HR career and my involvement with SHRM. I have been in HR for, I’ll just say many years. And I’m proud to say that I have had a national SHRM membership as well as a local chapter membership for my entire HR career.  It was often encouraged by my managers to have this membership to stay abreast of the ever changing world of HR and I quickly saw the value and continued my membership throughout the years. While I’ve had a local membership for over 20 years, I regret that I didn’t start volunteering for the chapter sooner. I first became involved and volunteered for GMASHRM the summer of 2009 and I haven’t looked back ever since. It has been the best experience for me both personally and professionally. I have a network of HR professionals who have grown from acquaintances to friends. And almost all of them I met through GMA SHRM events and my volunteer roles. If I have an HR question, there is no doubt that I would get several options and answers to my questions. I’m confident that anyone who is an active volunteer with our chapter or who has been a volunteer in the past would have very positive things to say about their experience. And while the board is a very important piece of the success of our chapter, I can’t give enough credit to all of the great volunteers we have on our committees! If you are not a volunteer, please consider being one. I promise you won’t regret it! GMA SHRM is a great chapter, but we can’t do it alone!

I’d also like to take this opportunity to thank Jeff Russell for his leadership as president over the past year! His dedication to our chapter along with his predecessors has made GMASHRM the strongest chapter in the state and one of the strongest in the Midwest! Thank you Jeff!

Looking forward, we have several exciting initiatives we are working on for the upcoming term. I will be sure to share once we get them finalized.

Speaking of next year, you are going to want to block your calendar for our next Human Capital Conference on Tuesday, May 3, 2016. Dave Ulrich will be joining us as our keynote speaker. If you don’t know who Dave is, you will want to check him out and free up that date on your calendar!  http://daveulrich.com/

Please know my door is always open if you have any questions, thoughts or concerns. You are welcome to contact me at dkoopman@Milios.com.

Together we can!

Proposals to Repeal the ACA’s “Cadillac Tax”

Submitted by Tammy L. Wacek, WPS Health Solutions

A provision of the Affordable Care Act (ACA) will impose an excise tax nicknamed the “Cadillac Tax” on employer sponsored health care coverage for which there is an excess benefit (high-cost plans). This is slated to start in 2018 and will likely impact many employers. Legislation is being proposed (H.R. 2050 & H.R. 879) to repeal this excise tax.

As the issues are being considered by Congress, the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) released initial guidance (Notice 2015-16) on the impending excise tax.

It addresses the definition of applicable coverage, the determination of the cost of applicable coverage and the application of the annual statutory dollar limit to the cost of applicable coverage.

This notice can be found on the www.irs.gov website.

Diversity

The Work of the Workforce Readiness and Diversity Committee

Heather A Kennedy, MA, SPHR, Sparq Coaching & Consulting, LLC

I’m Heather Kennedy, the 2015-2016 Director of Workforce Readiness and Diversity (WRDC), starting July 1. Please allow me to introduce myself, our committee, and tell you how you can get involved!

My background includes 20 years in Human Resources, particularly focused in facilitating and managing change. I am the founder of Sparq Coaching and Consulting – a leadership coaching, organizational consulting, and change management firm. Each of us has our own reasons for being interested in workplace diversity, inclusion, and equity. My interest began in childhood and has spanned my entire career. Madison and GMA SHRM have provided the environment and opportunity to focus on this area and truly make a difference.

The members of the WRDC have done a phenomenal job of supporting workforce readiness through the various organizations that we support with resume review and interviewing skills practice. The team also created the Job Boot Camp, with the Urban League, which has turned into a very successful annual event designed to help job seekers in their search. I am honored to be taking on the role of continuing that work and fostering greater visibility of HR in the areas of diversity, inclusion, and workplace equity.

For 2015-2016, we have a number of ambitious goals and new ways for you to stay involved. If you’d like to learn more, consider attending one of our upcoming committee meetings:

  • Friday, July 24th 11:00 am – Noon at Adecco, 200 River PL, Suite 150, (Lori Sheets – host) – or by conference call
  • Thursday, August 13th 4:30 pm – 6:30 pm at the Urban League of Greater Madison, 2222 S. Park St., # 200 (Vernon Blackwell – host)  - or by conference call
    • This meeting will focus on Job Boot Camp final preparations and review of the strategic goals for 2015-2016.
    • Refreshments will be provided.

If you would like to get involved with the WRDC, please contact me

Getting Naked with Each Other--The Role of Trust and Vulnerability in Creating a Cohesive Team

Location: Olbrich Gardens

According to Patrick Lencioni, author of the best-selling book The 5 Dysfunctions of a Team, the most important behavior a team can build is TRUST. In fact, a recent survey by the Table Group found that when coworkers admit their mistakes, 84% of respondents report that it makes them trust each other MORE; that is the foundation of a healthy working relationship and highly functioning team. And yet, so many of us are afraid to be vulnerable in the professional arena, afraid to admit our shortcomings, afraid to be 100% honest with our teammates. So, this begs this question:

As a leader, a manager, or an HR professional, how do you encourage your people to “get naked’ with one another, to be more vulnerable and more TRUSTING, so as to build a more cohesive team? How do you do that in practice?

In this experiential presentation, Chariti Gent takes participants through several exercises aimed at teaching how to build trust with others at work relatively quickly and with minimal effort. Knowing how to do this is absolutely critical for creating vibrant, cohesive, creative teams, and appealing, innovative, and culture-rich workplaces.

August 5, 2015 - HR Roundtable
Mental Health Accommodations in the Workplace

Location: M3 Insurance

Human Resources Professionals have become accustomed to accommodating employees with physical work restrictions. But what about employees with mental health diagnoses requiring accommodation? A new generation of workers is entering the workforce having been diagnosed with ADHD and other mental health diagnoses as school children. They are open with their diagnosis and have an expectation that they will receive accommodations in the workplace to succeed just as they have had in school. More adults are seeking treatment and counseling for mental health issues they may experience and they are also more aware of their rights. What challenges has this presented to you as an HR professional and how have you been accommodating your workforce who has mental health diagnoses?

Please join us for our Roundtable on August 5 for a discussion moderated by Mary Jo Spiekerman, SPHR, SHRM-SCP, Vice President of Human Resources at Hausmann-Johnson Insurance and Tom O’Day, JD, Attorney in the Labor, Employment and Health Care Group at Godfrey & Kahn. We will also be joined by Greg Chism, MSW, LCSW, Director of Employee Assistance Program Services at Family Service Madison.

Hot Topics in the Legal World: A Trifecta of Key Issue for Employers

Location: City Center West
Presenters:  Tom O'Day, Godfrey and Kahn - Bob Gregg, Boardman & Clark Law Firm - Jennifer Mirus, Boardman & Clark Law Firm

School may not yet be in session, but it’s never too soon to get educated!  Join us on August 20th for the popular annual Legal Hot Topics.  Three experienced labor and employment attorneys will address critical for your workplace and will provide you with both the legal background and the practical pointers to ensure you can address these issues effectively.

The program topics will include:

The latest developments in non-competition agreements:  Wisconsin has recently seen some significant developments in non-compete law that will likely assist employers in using and enforcing non-compete agreements.  This session will briefly introduce the concept of non-compete agreements, explain key legal developments, and provide attendees with the critical considerations in using these very important legal agreements.

Legal and practical issues in addressing violence in the workplace:  Threats of workplace violence require prompt (sometimes immediate) action, yet most employers are not prepared to deal with these situations timely and effectively.  This program will review legal issues related to workplace violence include the ADA direct threat standards, and will address policies and issues such as when and how to involve law enforcement.

The new Department of Labor proposed overtime rules (if the rules have not been issued by the time of the program, we will explore a different fascinating topic!):  The eagerly anticipated Department of Labor  proposed overtime rules have been issued—what do they mean to your organization and what should you do to address them?  The session will provide a helpful overview of the proposed rules and provide practical pointers for implementing overtime exemption audits and changes to employees’ exempt/non-exempt status.

Stepping Up: How Taking Responsibility Can Change Everything

Location: Alliant Energy Center

Presented by:  Dr. John Izzo

Taking responsibility means “Stepping up” and seeing yourself as the agent of change, whether it is changing your company or changing the world–it starts with you. In this hard hitting keynote Dr. John Izzo talks about a concept he calls 100-0 (100% Responsibility 0 % Excuses) and how each one of us can take greater accountability when we put our excuses aside by focusing on what we can do and the role we play. He gets leaders from the CEO to the front line thinking about what they can do personally to step up. Your leaders will leave knowing the main reasons why people don’t step up to take responsibility; the keys to getting people to take ownership; and how to influence people to create a culture of ownership.

Participants will learn:

  1. Giving People A Seat at the Table
  2. Giving Responsibility to Foster Responsibility
  3. Learning how to encourage ideas and innovation along with divergent thinking
  4. Develop a “tight-loose” style where outcomes and goals are clear while giving lots of leeway for the “how”

June GMA SHRM Golf Event Recap

Thank you to all who attended, golfed, and volunteered at the 2015 GMA SHRM Charity Golf Outing in June.  Also, thank you to our many sponsors and partners!  We had 64 golfers join us at The Legend at Bergamont, and others who attended the networking reception. Your generosity helped us raise $4785 for REACH-A-Child!  Additionally we were able to raise $ through our first-ever silent auction. All together, we were able to raise more this year for our partner than ever before.  Proceeds from the event will help REACH-A-Child continue their mission to “Help First Responders Comfort Children-In-Crisis”.  Stay tuned for more information on next year’s event, and GMA SHRM’s non-profit partner!

HR InTouch Guidelines

Article Writing:

Do you have an interest in writing for the HR InTouch? We have an interest in learning more about your area of expertise!

Why should you volunteer? Top three reasons: 1) to share your knowledge and experiences to educate others; 2) to become more connected in the HR and Dane County communities; and 3) to contribute towards the advancement of GMA SHRM and the HR profession.

The first step is for you to choose a submission option: you can pre-submit an article to GMA SHRM at any time for us to use in any of the upcoming newsletters, you can sign up to write for a particular month, or we can put you on a list of people to contact in future months whenever we need articles.

Article length:

Because the HR InTouch is now in an online format, the size is flexible. The article should be engaging and hold readers’ attention. Include the core information in your article, and we will advise if it is too lengthy.

Solicitation:

GMA SHRM is conscious not to allow solicitation through the articles, in an effort to protect the interests of our partners and members. The nature of the article should be educational (i.e., what are the business advantages of having a product like yours) or informational. Otherwise, if you truly are interested in advertising through the HR InTouch, you can work with our Marketing Committee. As a rule of thumb for article writing, if the submission relates to a for-profit event, or specifically markets your company (vs. your industry), it is an advertisement, and should be purchased. If it is a not-for-profit event that your company is hosting, or an announcement (i.e., a SHRM member recently joined your company), it is an acceptable addition to the HR InTouch content. If you have any questions related to the appropriateness of your submission, please contact us.

If you have questions, or to submit an article, contact GMA SHRM at chapteradmin@gmashrm.org .
