Dear GMA SHRM Members,

Happy Fall! This is an exciting and busy time of the year, with the WI State SHRM Conference October 9th to 11th and all that we know comes with fourth quarter planning.

In addition to the conference, be sure to reconnect at one of our upcoming virtual HR roundtables this month and register for our highly anticipated Legal Update PDS on November 19th, presented by Boardman & Clark and Littler. The first session will provide valuable insights to help you “Navigate Investigations, Discipline, and Performance Improvement Plans,” followed by “Hot Topics in Labor & Employment Law for Wisconsin Employers.” You can find all the details and registration information for these amazing events and more on our GMA Education & Events page.

Additionally, we’ll be announcing the winners of our New Member Referral Contest at the November PDS.  You can still get in the running; it goes through the end of October and it’s simple: Share code “Save25” with your HR friends, colleagues, vendors, customers, and anyone you think might benefit from GMA membership. When a new member joins using this code and includes your name in the “referred by” field, they'll receive a $25 discount on their first-year dues, and you'll be entered into the contest with a chance to win $200. For more information, please visit https://www.gmashrm.org/NewMemberContest

Thank you to everyone who has participated in the GMA compensation survey! This valuable data will be shared with all participants and made available for purchase to non-participating members for only $95. Watch for more information to come!

If you’d like to get more involved with committees, such as the compensation committee or others, please join us at our upcoming GMA SHRM 101 event. We also invite you to explore all the ways you can get involved here and reach out to any of us on the board of directors to learn more. We’d love to have you join in the fun!

Warm regards,

Laura Bermudo, President

Legal Update – Reminders Regarding Performance Improvement Plans

A Performance Improvement Plan (PIP) is an important document that organizations can use to help hold employees to high standards at work. However, HR professionals need to make sure they draft PIPs appropriately. You shouldn’t put an employee on a performance improvement plan solely for the purpose of going through the process. Well-drafted PIPs can be effective evidence of performance deficiencies if an employee is eventually terminated for performance reasons and challenges the validity of that termination.

Here are some tips for drafting PIPs:

   A.     Ensure that you retain at-will employment through the term of the PIP.
   B.     You can include timeframes for review (“We will check in every 15 days”), but do not imply that employment is guaranteed until the PIP has expired.
   C.     Do not agree to exclude the PIP from the employee’s personnel records if the employee successfully corrects the issues. It should remain part of the file in the event of future performance issues.
   D.     An employee doesn’t have to sign their PIP in order for it to be valid. If they refuse to sign, just note that on the form.  Don’t water down the significance of the form by stating “Employee’s signature acknowledges receipt of the document, not agreement with its contents.”

For more information on the legal aspects of PIPs, discipline, evaluations, and investigations, attend the November 19, 2024 PDS where we will be covering these issues in greater detail.

GMA SHRM and Member News

Committee Spotlight - Corporate Relations

Submitted by Elise Zielicke, Employee Benefits Consultant at Hausmann Group and Director of Corporate Relations

Welcome to October, a month dedicated to honoring our Corporate Partners Committee who is responsible for recruiting and stewarding the Corporate Partners who underwrite some of GMA SHRM’s Programming costs to ensure programming offered is high quality while keeping membership costs low.

Last year, our Corporate Partners Team had a record-breaking year, bringing in nine new partners! That’s right—nine! They’ve expanded our offerings, connecting us with resources in recruiting, insurance and benefits, HR technology, event planning, financial services, HR Consulting and much more. If you haven’t had a chance to meet our partners yet, make it a priority at the next event. You might discover solutions to your own workplace challenges!

The Corporate Partners Team of volunteers is dedicated to providing exceptional service to Corporate Partners and connecting them to our GMA SHRM Network. The volunteers have too many years of commitment to count, but we would like to thank them for their dedication and efforts to GMA SHRM and the Corporate Partners Program:

  • Bonny Bassett, QTI Group
  • Brittany Gill, Palmer Johnson Enterprises
  • Brittany Nyenhuis, Human Element Consulting
  • Chris Storlie, Carlson Dettmann
  • Elise Zielicke, Hausmann Group
  • Keri Allard, Sustainable HR PEO
  • Laura Bermudo, Hausmann Group
  • Raj Ravi, Hooper Corporation
  • Sam Tew, Hausmann Group
  • Susan Gafner, University of Wisconsin – Madison

Thanks to these champions, we’re getting even more requests for new partners for 2025! Expect to see some familiar faces, along with a few new ones who might just add that special sparkle to your networking experience. Be sure to give them a warm welcome—after all, a little gratitude goes a long way (and may even earn you some free swag!).

And if you or your company is thinking about joining our Corporate Partner Program for 2025, contact Elise Zielicke, our Director of Corporate Partners, at ezielicke@myhaus.com. Don’t wait too long—spots are limited and fill up quickly, so be sure to secure your place by December 1st, 2024.

Here’s to October and the incredible work of our Corporate Partners Team! Let’s make the most of our connections and continue to build a strong community together.

HR InTouch Guidelines

Article Writing:
Do you have an interest in writing for the HR InTouch? We have an interest in learning more about your area of expertise!
Why should you volunteer? Top three reasons: 1) to share your knowledge and experiences to educate others; 2) to become more connected in the HR and Dane County communities; and 3) to contribute towards the advancement of GMA SHRM and the HR profession.
The first step is for you to choose a submission option: you can pre-submit an article to GMA SHRM at any time for us to use in any of the upcoming newsletters, you can sign up to write for a particular month, or we can put you on a list of people to contact in future months whenever we need articles.
Article length:
Because the HR InTouch is now in an online format, the size is flexible. The article should be engaging and hold readers’ attention. Include the core information in your article, and we will advise if it is too lengthy.
Solicitation:
GMA SHRM is conscious not to allow solicitation through the articles, in an effort to protect the interests of our partners and members. The nature of the article should be educational (i.e., what are the business advantages of having a product like yours) or informational. Otherwise, if you truly are interested in advertising through the HR InTouch, you can work with our Marketing Committee. As a rule of thumb for article writing, if the submission relates to a for-profit event, or specifically markets your company (vs. your industry), it is an advertisement, and should be purchased. If it is a not-for-profit event that your company is hosting, or an announcement (i.e., a SHRM member recently joined your company), it is an acceptable addition to the HR InTouch content. If you have any questions related to the appropriateness of your submission, please contact us.
If you have questions, or to submit an article, contact GMA SHRM at chapteradmin@gmashrm.org .
