Greetings Fellow GMA SHRM Members,
Stewardship.
On a cold and snowy day this past January your GMA SHRM Board of Directors and about twenty additional members and volunteers came together for a day-long planning retreat to develop a new strategic plan for the chapter. This is an annual board event when we explore where the chapter is today, where we want it to be in the future, and what actions we need to take as a chapter to help us move toward our vision. This year we made a concerted effort to involve more of our membership in this process to ensure that the board develops its vision and strategy based upon a greater representation of our membership.
What emerged from this day of strategic thinking and planning was a revitalized vision and mission for the chapter and a new strategic plan that builds upon the great work accomplished by previous GMA SHRM boards. These results, I think, speak to the board’s commitment to stewardship – which I define as an ethic that embodies responsible planning and management of resources.
The vision for the chapter that we developed on that winter day is that GMA SHRM exists to:
“Provide the greater Madison community with high caliber HR talent that delivers business results.”
Our re-imagined mission for the chapter is to:
“Offer members a variety of professional development opportunities and an environment in which to share ideas, experiences, and build lasting relationships.”
Our new vision and mission deeply inform the board’s decisions and actions as it tackles the challenges of managing the largest SHRM chapter in Wisconsin. All of the issues that come before us are examined through the stewardship lens that the vision and mission provides for us. Every initiative, every expenditure, every budget decision, and every program we decide to support is anchored to our commitment to serving the long-term interests and needs of our members.
To help accomplish this renewed vision and mission, the group assembled in January also identified the preliminary elements of our strategic agenda. Over the past several months the board took this preliminary strategic agenda and developed and refined it into a new strategic plan for 2014-2016. Since this plan defines how the board will serve the chapter over the next several years, I felt that you should know the agenda and the goals that we will be pursuing in the months ahead:
· Issue #1 – The Future of HR: Our goals in this area include:
o Create a buddy/mentor program
o Establish an HR Business Partner Development Program
o Promote the value of GMA SHRM membership to the C-suite
· Issue #2 – Recruiting, Maintaining, and Developing Volunteer Leaders: Our goals in this area include:
o Assess why people join GMA SHRM
o Develop a customer-focused onboarding process
· Issue #3 – Leveraging Technology: Our goals in this area include:
o Create a new board position focused on technology – Director of Technology and Social Media (we’ve already accomplished this and Melissa Versnik is our first director!)
o Research virtual learning opportunities
o Research collaborative/document sharing options for members
o Market and promote social media sites
o Review GMA SHRM website and update content
· Issue #4 – Member Engagement: Our goals in this area include:
o Increase financial investment in speakers and evaluate results
o Increase the number of active volunteers and committee members
o Enhance outreach to students
o Explore new methods for understanding and engaging members to increase retention and attendance at chapter events
o Hold an annual “at large” event to grow local membership among national SHRM members
· Issue #5 – Community Outreach: Our goals in this area include:
o Partner with other organizations to address issues in the Race to Equity report
o Examine the cost/benefit of GMA membership in local chambers
o Examine the cost/benefit of GMA becoming a go-to resource for local media and the community

I encourage you to check out your chapter’s plan and then get involved in any of the goals and initiatives that interest you. This agenda offers exciting new directions for the chapter . . . but we can’t get there without you! So please get involved. Let me know where you’d like to contribute to the chapter’s continued success.
Stewardship is a powerful word. Your board understands the weight and responsibility that comes with their leadership role. Every day we do our best to provide great service to our members while carefully managing the resources you’ve entrusted to us.

FLSA Update Related to Federal Contractors

Rep. Keith Ellison (D-MN) has proposed a series of amendments that would impact federal contractors. One proposed amendment would bar federal contractors from holding and/or competing for federal contracts if they had a single Fair Labor Standards Act violation in the past five years. If enacted into law, this would circumvent long-standing suspension and debarment procedures that exist under federal contracting regulations.
SHRM strongly opposes this amendment and has sent letters to the U.S. House of Representatives requesting they vote “no” on this amendment that could be harmful to employers.
HR Certification Update
Earlier this spring, SHRM informed its membership that a new certification would be rolled out in 2015. Information for the certification has been slow in being released and GMA will do our best to keep our membership informed of the changes, potential impact and how we will address the new certification with our membership. Highlighted below is some of the recent information received.

Wednesday, September 17, 2014 Your organization is probably talking about innovation. You may even be investing in programs and initiatives with the aim to create more innovation. There is no doubt regarding its importance. Innovation is survival. But, is it actually happening? In this provocative session, you will gain a deeper understanding of innovation and discover many common misconceptions about how it works. Today, Jason’s quest is to identify, recognize, and support awesome workplaces as the Director of Best Places to Work for Quantum Workplace. Classically impatient, curious and ambitious, Jason’s early career was a rapid progression of sales and management roles including launching, leading, and ultimately selling a small business in his mid-twenties. He’s a leader, sales guy, entrepreneur, and corporate executive all rolled up into one.

Do you remember Kickball? Well it remembers you!
Our philanthropic partner, REACH-a-Child, is hosting a fun and fabulous tournament this fall! “Kickin’ It For Kids” is a Co-Ed kickball tournament being held to benefit REACH-a-Child. This all day event is scheduled for Saturday September 20th at Warner Park and Mallards Stadium!
Be one of the 16 adult teams that will take part in this fun event raising money for charity! Each team will consist of 9-12 players with at least 3 women on each team. Get your company team together and show us what you got! Who will take home some hardware? FIRST COME FIRST SERVE!

First of all, thank you to our 100+ members who completed our annual member survey. We received some great information that will help us continue to provide programs our members are looking for. For those who participated in the survey, we had a drawing to win a FREE registration for our 2015 Human Capital Conference. Our winner is… Todd Febus with Express Employment Professionals! Congratulations Todd!
Thank you to all who golfed in our June event. We had 80 golfers, a record! We were able to raise $2,310 for REACH-a-Child. It was a gorgeous, sunny day at The Oaks and fun was had by all! The new committee will be responsible for website revisions, social media posting, and coming up with new ways for our members to engage and collaborate via technology (the exciting part!). Members Receive Professional Achievement Honors Career Partners International (CPI), one of the world’s most successful global providers of outplacement services, recently recognized two Madison area career consultants for their professional achievement in the field of career transition. Clara Hurd Nydam and Mo Afshar are employed by CPI’s southern Wisconsin partner, Career Momentum.
Clara Hurd Nydam was recognized as a CPI Master Career Transition Consultant. Clara, the former owner of Career Momentum, Inc., continues to provide career transition services and leadership to the consulting team in Career Partners’ Madison and Milwaukee offices. She has provided career consulting, resume writing, and LinkedIn networking advice to more than 3000 area job seekers over the past 20 years.
Mo Afshar was recognized as a CPI Senior Career Transition Consultant. Mo joined Career Momentum in 2012 and has received top ratings from every job transition candidate he has served. Prior to joining the Career Partners International team, Mo worked as a talent management and organizational development consultant for major firms in Chicago, Dallas and internationally.

HR InTouch GuidelinesArticle Writing: Do you have an interest in writing for the HR InTouch? We have an interest in learning more about your area of expertise! Why should you volunteer? Top three reasons: 1) to share your knowledge and experiences to educate others; 2) to become more connected in the HR and Dane County communities; and 3) to contribute towards the advancement of GMA SHRM and the HR profession. The first step is for you to choose a submission option: you can pre-submit an article to GMA SHRM at any time for us to use in any of the upcoming newsletters, you can sign up to write for a particular month, or we can put you on a list of people to contact in future months whenever we need articles. Article length: Because the HR InTouch is now in an online format, the size is flexible. The article should be engaging and hold readers’ attention. Include the core information in your article, and we will advise if it is too lengthy. Solicitation: GMA SHRM is conscious not to allow solicitation through the articles, in an effort to protect the interests of our partners and members. The nature of the article should be educational (i.e., what are the business advantages of having a product like yours) or informational. Otherwise, if you truly are interested in advertising through the HR InTouch, you can work with our Marketing Committee. As a rule of thumb for article writing, if the submission relates to a for-profit event, or specifically markets your company (vs. your industry), it is an advertisement, and should be purchased. If it is a not-for-profit event that your company is hosting, or an announcement (i.e., a SHRM member recently joined your company), it is an acceptable addition to the HR InTouch content.
