Thank you!

Greetings!

Community.  The Oxford English Dictionary defines community as “a feeling of fellowship with others, as a result of sharing common attitudes, interests, and goals.” For me, GMA SHRM actually lives this definition of community better than any organization that I have ever been a part of. We are this strong fellowship of like-minded people, over 850 strong, who share a common bond. Our attitudes, values, interests, and goals converge around leveraging the tremendous power and creativity of our workforces to create value in society. By being part of this larger human resource community, we become stronger by learning from each other, by sharing effective practices, by leaning on each other for support/reinforcement, and by bringing in top-notch subject matter experts to share their knowledge with us.

In the HR world it’s far too easy to get sucked into the dramas of our own workplaces, get lost in crisis management, or simply cobble together a solution to a problem we’ve never seen before. But when we look to our community of HR professionals (that’s GMA SHRM), we’re no longer alone. There’s someone out there in the GMA SHRM network who’s likely tackled the same problem. What a relief to know that we don’t have to create something new or make stuff up because our community is there for us. That, I hope, is where GMA SHRM shines for you. When you are stuck, when you need ideas, when you are facing a challenge that you’ve never faced before…our members are there for you. They are just an e-mail, or phone call, or social media post away. The power of the GMA SHRM community manifest, every day.

How can you take full advantage of the power of our GMA SHRM community? It’s pretty easy. Here are some suggestions:
  • Attend one of our monthly programming events and our May Human Capital Conference. Our Strategic Summits, Toolboxes, HR Roundtables, and our Human Capital Conference provide terrific opportunities to learn, network, problem solve, and just feel as though you’re not alone in tackling some of your HR challenges.
  • Participate in our twice-annual networking events. What a great chance to meet fellow members and learn more about them than just their job titles! Our next networking event is scheduled for March of next year.
  • Post a question in our GMA SHRM LinkedIn group and experience the wisdom of the crowds as our members offer their experience and insights to help you tackle your challenge.
  • Visit our GMA SHRM Facebook page to learn what we’re up to and see pictures of our members in action – whether that be attending a Strategic Summit, a networking event, or volunteering in the community.
  • Check out our GMA SHRM webpage where you can consult the online member directory, read this newsletter, register for our programs, and learn more about the array of programs and services we offer.
  • Fill out your profile in the Peer Advice Network and then share your expertise with others while posing questions to others who have expertise that you may not have.
  • Check out our HR Resource Groups:  the Solo Practitioners Resource Group and the Health Care Resource Group. These peer-led groups immerse themselves in and share insights with each other on the unique challenges of being a solo practitioner or in the healthcare field.
  • Volunteer to serve on one of our many committees. The great work of GMA SHRM just wouldn’t happen if it weren’t for people like you giving back to the HR community. Our member volunteers help with marketing, programming, workforce development and diversity, professional development, technology, and governmental affairs. The thing is, when you give back to the community as a volunteer, you end up benefiting even more. Funny how that works. That’s the power of community.
Building and sustaining community requires work. As your representatives in this process, the GMA SHRM Board is all about community. Every decision and action we take is focused on this. And if we do our jobs well – in concert with the creative energy of our more than 80 volunteers – the GMA SHRM community will continue to be strong, for many years into the future.

Want to help sustain your HR community? Attend our GMA SHRM Revealed event on October 30th.  At this networking/informational meeting you’ll learn more about all of the great stuff that we’re involved in – and where you can help out as a volunteer to keep GMA SHRM strong.

See you at the next GMA SHRM community event!

Regards,

Jeff Russell

Are you prepared for a Fair Labor Standards Act Audit?
Contributed by Tammy Wacek, Wisconsin Physicians Service Insurance Corporation

It is increasingly important for employers to be prepared for a Fair Labor Standards Act audit and GMA SHRM can help you obtain the tools and knowledge to ensure compliance within your organization. In July, President Obama signed the Fair Pay and Safe Workplaces Executive Order that requires federal contractors to disclose labor law violations and infractions could prevent employers from obtaining future federal contracts. It is important for all employers to understand the requirements under labor law and ensure they are not in violation.

By attending our free Toolbox event on October 23, 2014, GMA SHRM members can learn more about the intricacies of the law and walk through how to prepare for an audit.

HR InTouch Guidelines

Article Writing:

Do you have an interest in writing for the HR InTouch? We have an interest in learning more about your area of expertise!

Why should you volunteer? Top three reasons: 1) to share your knowledge and experiences to educate others; 2) to become more connected in the HR and Dane County communities; and 3) to contribute towards the advancement of GMA SHRM and the HR profession.

The first step is for you to choose a submission option: you can pre-submit an article to GMA SHRM at any time for us to use in any of the upcoming newsletters, you can sign up to write for a particular month, or we can put you on a list of people to contact in future months whenever we need articles.

Article length:

Because the HR InTouch is now in an online format, the size is flexible. The article should be engaging and hold readers’ attention. Include the core information in your article, and we will advise if it is too lengthy.

Solicitation:

GMA SHRM is conscious not to allow solicitation through the articles, in an effort to protect the interests of our partners and members. The nature of the article should be educational (i.e., what are the business advantages of having a product like yours) or informational. Otherwise, if you truly are interested in advertising through the HR InTouch, you can work with our Marketing Committee. As a rule of thumb for article writing, if the submission relates to a for-profit event, or specifically markets your company (vs. your industry), it is an advertisement, and should be purchased. If it is a not-for-profit event that your company is hosting, or an announcement (i.e., a SHRM member recently joined your company), it is an acceptable addition to the HR InTouch content. If you have any questions related to the appropriateness of your submission, please contact us.

If you have questions, or to submit an article, contact GMA SHRM at chapteradmin@gmashrm.org .
